And Show Up Saturday
Clayton voters will not get to vote on MARTA in November unless leaders reach an agreement by Sunday (July 6).
On Tuesday, July 1 in Jonesboro, Clayton County Commissioners refused to approve the whole penny sales tax sought by MARTA. The commissioners approved only a half-penny.
The following morning in Atlanta, MARTA's Board of Directors rejected the half-penny proposal, but offered again to provide bus and rail service if Clayton would agree to a whole penny sales tax.
The whole penny would raise an estimated $46 million per year, enough to support both bus and rail. The half penny would raise only enough money for buses.
MARTA's action sends the question back to Clayton County, which has scheduled a special meeting at 10:00am on Saturday, July 5.
We need to keep transit expansion hopes alive.

CONTACT COMMISSIONER GAIL HAMBRICK
Two of five Clayton Commissioners agree with MARTA about the full penny. A third commissioner needs to vote yes to the full penny by Sunday to keep the deal alive.
The Commissioner most likely to change her mind is Gail Hambrick. Please contact her right now and forward this to anyone you think might be willing to contact her.
Commissioner Gail Hambrick

Dear Commissioner Hambrick:
MARTA bus and rail would create a tremendous opportunity for economic development in Clayton County. Public transit is also needed for people too old to drive, too young to drive, too sick to drive, and those unable to afford a car. Clayton property owners need to fill empty commercial spaces and homes. Rail and bus together can accomplish these things. We are asking you to let the voters decide. Please vote to let voters decide on a full penny sales tax for MARTA and help kick-start Clayton's recovery.
